I presented KBox at Hardware Developers Didactic Galactic (HDDG) #14 in San Francisco. KBox is an open-source NMEA gateway for boats — it connects marine electronics (wind, speed, depth sensors) to WiFi-enabled devices like tablets and phones.

The talk covered the design decisions behind KBox: choosing the Teensy microcontroller, implementing the NMEA 2000 protocol, handling the harsh marine electrical environment, and making the whole thing open source so other sailors could build and improve it.
